Holiday Wish List :: Shannon Ander

If the name Shannon Ander looks familiar it’s likely because she’s been known to make periodic appearances on this here blog. She’s my favorite Canadian, a former Closet Caser (check her out here) and a self-professed George Michael fanatic. At any rate, Shannon wanted to share one of her fondest Christmas memories with us…as well as some items that made it onto her wish list this year. Enjoy!

What is my favourite part about the holidays? OBVIOUSLY it’s the fact that I can play Wham’s “Last Christmas” on repeat and actually get away with it! My favourite Christmas of all time was in 1987. I hoped and hoped and wished so hard (and maybe even prayed a little) for George Michael’s Faith tape. I remember laying in bed all night singing “Faith” in my head and wondering why, when I sang it out loud, it never sounded as good as when I sang it in my head.

My parents had a Christmas tradition of putting three gifts at the foot of my sister and I’s bed. We could open those three at 7am when my Dad got up. Then, around 10am, we’d move to the family room to open the rest of the gifts under the tree. That Christmas I woke up at 4am and saw the little trio of gifts at the foot of my bed. I grabbed the 5″ by 3″ shaped box and very, very slowly peeled the tape on the corners off the edge to see what was inside and it was…a Kylie Minogue cassette! I must have frantically looked back at the pile and grabbed another 5″ by 3″ box. This time, I ripped at the tape holding the ends of the wrapping paper together and opened what would forever be known as the best Christmas gift in the world.

Closet Case :: Kellen Walsh

“I love fashion and working with clothes,” remarked this week’s It Girl Kellen Walsh, who works as the web operations manager for LuLu*s. “I think that being a personal stylist would be amazing. Shopping and dressing other people sounds fun,” she continued.

Considering how amazing this lady always looks, I know I would trust her to dress me in a heartbeat! Of course, the 29-year-old stunner can pretty much rock any look. And, as cute as Kellen is in these “Closet Case” photos, she’s even more adorable in real life. True story. She has a charming personality that makes you feel as though you’ve been best friends with her for…like…ever.

Originally from Elk Grove, Kellen now lives in Chico with her hubby, Mike, and their pooch, Rascal. When I showed up at Kellen’s house for last weekend’s photo shoot I instantly felt at ease—probably a combination of this lovely lady’s charismatic character and the bubbly she had cracked open for us. Also on the scene were Kellen’s super sweet hubby and her gal pal, Amy (who also happens to work at Lulu*s). With bubbly in hand, we spent an hour shooting the shit…and pictures. We had a blast—with Kellen as my fabulous model and Amy as my rockin’ photo assistant. So. Much. Fun.

A self-proclaimed accessories junkie, Kellen has a killer collection of rings, necklaces and earrings to accompany her kick-ass wardrobe. One of her favorite jewelry designers is Claire Fong, who fashions some amazing earrings from scraps of leather and suede. I was seriously coveting Kellen’s collection of accessories.

Describe your personal style.
My personal style has certainly evolved. It is a little bit boho, a little bit preppy, a little bit rock & roll. I love T-shirts and jeans, but I also love getting dressed up. I take pleasure in getting ready for a night out on the town. I think that clothes should be fun and make you feel good. When you have that perfect outfit on you can’t help but feel happy. I like mixing patterns, classic with edgy, etc. I like putting something unexpected together and having it totally work out.

Who are your favorite fashion designers?
Diane Von Furstenberg is number 1. The colors and patterns she uses are so vibrant and fun! Zac Posen, Christian Siriano, House of Harlow (Nicole Richie), Elizabeth & James (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) are all amazing. House of Harlow and Elizabeth & James are lines that are easily wearable.

If you could raid anyone’s wardrobe whose would it be?
Stacy London (from “What Not to Wear”) immediately comes to mind. Zooey Deschanel is a close second.

Where do you turn for fashion inspiration?I love reading blogs. Cupcakes and Cashmere, Pandora’s Box, and the Glamouri are good sources for inspiration. I love Vogue, InStyle, and Lucky Magazine. “Project Runway” and “What Not to Wear” are good TV shows that help inspire me.

Is there an item you’re currently eyeing?

I am dying for a pair of fringe boots. I found a pair by Jeffrey Campbell that are a little out of my price range. So, the hunt is on for a similar pair!

What was your most recent wardrobe purchase?

I bought this really fun dress to wear to my friend’s baby shower. It has such a southwestern feel. I love the color combo. The same day I bought some chunky socks. I am loving the chunky socks with tights and boots for the fall.

What is one item in your closet can’t you live without?

My Steve Madden brown boots. I wear them with everything all year round. They are so comfortable.

What’s in your closet that you’ve never worn?

I purged my closet about a month ago so I have worn everything that is in there. But I have only worn this green pleated maxi skirt once. Its a little sheer so I need to find a good slip. I have been struggling to figure out what to pair it with.

How often do you purge items from your closet?Twice a year, in the spring and the fall. My husband, Mike, has really had a hand in keeping me from being such a pack rat. If I didn’t wear it all season it goes to Goodwill.

Style-wise, is there a current trend you can’t stand on men? On women?

On women I do not like that bodysuits have made a comeback. Unless you are super skinny it is just not flattering or comfortable on anyone. On men, I would have to go with the turtleneck. It was featured on GQ’s website the other day. I don’t know why I dislike it. Maybe cause it seems so restricted.

What are your favorite styling products?Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny Hair Serum and Moroccan Oil are my absolute favorite hair products. They help contain my little frizzies and smell so so good. Giorgio Armani’s Sensi is my favorite perfume but it was discontinued so I need to find another one. MAC’s black eyeliner pencil is so smooth. I recently bought a Cover Girl tinted lip balm from their new Natureluxe line. It is amazing. I wear it everyday. I need to buy more shades.I cannot live without mascara. My eyelashes are very light so it looks like I don’t have any without mascara. I use Cover Girl Lash Blast Volume in very black.

Have any shopping spots you’re willing to divulge?

Well, obviously I am partial to Lulu*s. They have great clothes and great prices and the discount is pretty awesome, too. When I do go shopping I love Urban Outfitters, H&M, Piperlime, and DSW. I also like exploring a city and finding the local boutiques. Those are my favorite.

What are some of your favorite spots in Chico?
Basque Norte, the Banshee, Shubert’s, One Mile, and Nettleton Stadium.

Unrelated to fashion, but because I am interested…what’s on your iPod?
I am a junky for Top 40 dance songs. Haha! Jack’s Mannequin is my favorite band. The Black Keys, Adele, the Heavy, and She & Him are on my current rotation.

I am seriously in love with the delicate underpinnings and sleep masks created by the ever-so-adorable Japanese designer Naomi (couldn't track down her last name). At any rate, they have a very roaring '20s feel to them and I would like nothing more than to stock my entire lingerie collection with them...unfortunately, the $35-$40 price range is too steep for my wallet. Of course, the sleep masks are only $18 and the silk satin cat sleep mask would surely give new meaning to taking a cat nap. Check out the Naomi Lingerie shop & the blog for more info. An ex-boyfriend of mine once bought me a T-shirt that read: "Irish temper, Italian attitude" - which I refused to wear! At any rate, I have no doubt that if we were together today he would buy me this shirt by Every Little Counts - which I would gladly sport. The Brooklyn-based graphic T-shirt line is the brainchild of husband-and-wife design duo Amy Snider and Adam Schwartz, and each piece is hand printed with eco-friendly, water-based inks. Oh, and while the clothes in the shop may be for the lady-folk, the sultry models are sure to entice the men.

I have been a Pixies fan since I first heard them back in junior high. Unfortunately, the band broke up around that same time. At any rate, I have always loved "La La Love You" - although, "Gigantic" is by far my absolute favorite song - and this print by Etsy seller SparklePower makes me happy. Desk Job

A couple of weeks ago I scored this awesome mid-century modern desk thanks to my friend Rosemary, who first discovered the post on Craigslist. It wasn't in the greatest of shape - as it had served as a desk for several kids in the family - but my friends are pros when it come to refinishing furniture and they promised to help me restore it to its rightful state. So, I forked over the cash, loaded the desk into my friend Sarah's Volvo station wagon and stored it in Rosemary's living room until it was time to work our magic. The top was covered with water stains and one of the kids had carved into the top that they "were here." There was also what appeared to be a pentagram carved into the top. Needless to say, I was a little concerned that we weren't going to be able to get rid of some of the darker, deeper blemishes.

Lucky for me, Rosemary and Nathan really do know how to refinish furniture and they were more than willing to put in the elbow grease this job required. Armed with fine-grit sandpaper, we got to work sanding down past the stains and carvings as best we could. Then, we moved on to the tack cloth, removing any dust created from the sanding.

After the tack cloth, we rubbed furniture re-finisher into the wood using steel wool. Let me just say, that shit evaporates like nothing I've ever encountered. I swear, we'd pour a tiny amount into a shallow bowl and it would gone not even a minute later. Wild! At any rate, when we were done with that step, we used rags to apply the final stain and this is what the end result looked like:

Isn't it beautiful?!! Oh, and remember all those water stains? Look now, they're gone!

After a week or so of the desk sitting in my laundry room drying and me dying to put it to use, I finally got to move it in the house. Isn't it lovely? Best. Find. Ever. Thanks to Rosemary and Nathan for helping me with the process - you guys rock! Here it is in my house:

This morning, my coworker and I hit up the Sacramento Antique Faire, a monthly outdoor marketplace featuring a variety of collectibles from hundreds of Northern California dealers. I made a point of bringing only enough cash to cover the $3 entrance fee...as I've been on a spending bender as of late. Row after row of antiques and mid-century modern finds, I found myself envisioning the most covetable items taking their rightful place in my home. Still, without any money, I had no choice but to resist...until my coworker offered to lend me some cash! So, I ended up borrowing $13 so I could buy a 1946 Kodak Brownie Target Six-16 (pictured several photos below) to add to my collection of vintage cameras. Thanks, Lindsay!! Pay you back tomorrow.

{Disneyland gets decked out for Halloween}

I have a ton of virtual relationships thanks to the beast we all know as social media and, every once in awhile, one of those friendships jumps off the computer screen and lands in the real world. Sometimes the online connection you make with someone doesn't translate to the real world (awkward!) and sometimes it does (yay!). Take for instance, my friendship with Our Designed Life blogger Monica Nicholson. We started "tweeting" with each other nearly a year ago and usually tweet almost every day - which is more contact than I have with many of my local friends. When Monica suggested I come down to Los Angeles for a visit I was a little hesitant, but I decided to roll with it. Luckily, Monica was super awesome and I had a wonderful visit with her. She chauffeured me all around the Los Angeles area - taking me on a tour of her city (Venice Beach) and the happiest place on Earth (Disneyland). It was a whirlwind visit, but I had a blast.

I kind of love be giving writing assignments. It forces me out of my comfort zone and pushes me to be more creative...and having a deadline helps me actually get it done. I've lived in Sacramento for many years and Lumens Light + Living has always been one of my favorite local shops. Aside from all the gorgeous lighting options, the showroom also features a drool-worthy selection of home goods by the likes of Alessi, Angela Adams, Missoni Home, Blu Dot, Littala and Jonathan Adler. Whenever it's time to pick out a gift for one of my design-savvy friends, Lumens is one of my first stops. Even when I'm broke, I still like to peruse all the stylish design goodies and lighting fixtures for inspiration.

Well, after starting a virtual relationship with the shop on Twitter, I decided to see if Lumens' owner Ken Plumlee would be interested in doing an interview for my little blog. Ken: We're just about 6 years old.

B&S: Can you tell us a little about Lumens?

Ken: Lumens is really focused on design-oriented lighting and home accessories. We tried to build a retail concept that was life-style driven. There's are certainly a lot of design stores around the country, but we wanted to be broader than that so we look for products that have a good, clean design aesthetic but across a much broader range of manufactures. Lighting is really the nuts and bolts of what we do, but because we appeal to a customer who appreciates design we try to bring in the furniture, accessories and gift items that compliment the lifestyle that our customers appreciate.

B&S: How about the lighting style?

Ken: We look for well-designed lighting across many styles. A lot of people think that Lumens is only contemporary lighting, but that is not the case. No matter what kind of style your interested in, we have those resources. You may drive by the place it may look all sparkly and modern, but when we sit down with you to work on your project we have access to hundreds of styles.

B&S: Is Sacramento the only brick-and-mortar store?

Ken: Yes, but we are primarily an online retailer, that is by far the biggest part of our business. The Sacramento showroom is an important part because it gives us hands-on experience with our products, let's us be part of the community. It's where we started from.

B&S: Lumens has been offering lighting seminars, can you tell us a little more about that?

Ken: We've been doing it for about 8 months, and it's usually a once a month thing. It's to give people who may be planning a remodel an opportunity to start thinking about lighting early in the process. Lighting is often the last thing people think about during a remodel and it usually happens when the contractor says, "oh, by the way, you need to pick out your lights." By that time, all the wiring has probably done and it's too late to start thinking about all the controls and where to place things. Most contractors tend to plop one outlet in the middle of the room and assume that will do the trick. If you think about it in advance you can design your lighting in a thoughtful way and it can make a huge impact on that space.

Ken: I think lighting is huge. Think about being in a restaurant and how you feel when the lighting is well done. If you've ever been in a restaurant at like 8 p.m. when the bring all the lighting down and all of the sudden you go "oh, wow." It's like it becomes an entirely different place. The ability to layer light is important - you want light at different levels of the room, at different heights, you want to be able to backlight and use accent lights. Bringing that all together has a huge impact on a space.

When Tim and Tanya purchased their South Land Park home two years ago, they knew full well that transforming the quaint little fixer-upper into their dream home was going to be a huge undertaking. Still, they were up for the challenge and after a lot of hard work, some tough decisions and many gallons of paint the couple has nearly completed their modern, yet cozy home. I say nearly because the backyard is still a work in progress. After some gentle prodding, Tanya agreed to let B&S snap some photos of her lovely home - minus the yard. Hope you enjoy the tour!

How much has your home changed since you moved in? Completely. We added central heat and air, new windows, all new electrical, new doors, refinished floors, remodeled kitchen, remodeled bathroom, new plumbing, appliances and new furniture.

Proudest DIY project...The headboard in the guest bedroom is made out of scrap wood from various projects. It's also backlit and has a switch to turn the light off and on built right in.

DIY project you're currently working on? Probably some pillows from scrap material. But, after the remodel, we had enough DIY to tide us over for quite awhile.

Bay Area-based designer Chris Brigham, the brains behind Knife & Saw, has created a solution for indoor bike storage or, as he calls it, "elegant bike management." Brigham's "bike shelf" - which is what he's calling it until he comes up with something more clever- is fashioned from solid wood (walnut or ash) and a steel rod mount. The sleek shelf provides a means for storing (and displaying) your bike and whatever else you want to place on the shelf (flowers, books, your helmet...the sky is the limit). The shelf is designed to hold most frames, but you can check out the specs just to make sure.

Louis Vuitton fashion director Daniel Piette once described the Spanish fashion retailer Zara as "possibly the most innovative and devastating retailer in the world." Well, now that Zara finally has an online shop (see below before you get too excited), the company is truly ready to start conquering the world. There are some very covetable pieces in the collection and the prices are totally reasonable. Take for instance this check print cape, which retails for a mere $129. I absolutely love it...and if you don't, it's likely that there is something seriously wrong with you. I'm serious, and if you need a ride to the hospital just let me know.

Update: It looks like the online shop is only open to those in France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and the UK. Total bummer. So sad.

Soul Collective

This past Saturday, my friend Sarah and I headed to San Francisco to meet some friends and to check out the daytime soul party known as Hard French. The outdoor party is held on the first Saturday of the month from 3-8pm and is a place where "drag queens mingle with lesbians, leather daddy's soul dance with cholas, sharps share hot dogs with activists, jocks make out with twinks, brown meets white meets purple meets gay guy meets ladies meets q and everyone leaves excited for the next party." In other words, this party is for anyone and everyone who wants to get their dance on to some good soul music.

We didn't arrive at the party until 4:40pm...and when we did, there was quite a queue waiting to get inside the already packed El Rio. It took us nearly two hours to make our way to the front of the line, which could have really sucked save for the fact that we spent that time meeting cool people, eating take-out from Baby Blues BBQ (which was delish!) and drinking tall-boys out of brown paper bags (can you say classy?). Some of our friends who had already been inside even came out to kick it with us in line...thanks for being so awesome Jen and Theo!

Once we were finally inside the party, we grabbed some drinks and headed straight for the dance floor. DJ Carnitas and DJ Brown Amy kept the tunes coming as the elated crowd danced and sang along to songs by the likes of Sly and the Family Stone, Fats Domino, Gladys Knight and the Pips and the Marvelettes. It was so much fun! The only downside was that the party ended way too soon. Next time, I'm arriving early so I can maximize my dance time. Word on the street is that there's only one more party before Hard French breaks for the winter...so, mark your calendars for October 2nd!

Oh, if only I had enough money to splurge on this lovely French Dot wallpaper by Nama Rococo. Alas, the gorgeous "couture" wallpaper is a tad spendy at $220 per sheet. I mean, they make perfect catch-alls for a variety of things: paperclips, bobby pins, matchbooks, pocket change and basically anything else that's small and needs containing. Take a walk through my apartment and you're guaranteed to spot a few such containers in every room. That said, I'm not the least bit surprised to find myself coveting this black spotted urchin cup (with blue interior) by Minneapolis-based Etsy seller DiTerra. It's super cute...and with my upcoming trip to Maui only a few weeks away, I've got the ocean on my mind.

Yesterday, me and five of my lovely friends got dolled up and headed to San Francisco for an afternoon at Crown & Crumpet, an adorable little tea room located in Ghirardelli Square. The weather was perfect, the company was impeccable, and the atmosphere and decor at Crown & Crumpet was perfection! Pre-tea, we poked around in the little gift shop, which was chock-full of imported British treats and covetable creations by Etsy sellers. Two highlights were this "Let them eat cake" poster by BluLima and these crochet dream catchers by Pretty Little Things. The shop also had British candies, various Crown & Crumpet swag and an assortment of other tea-related gifts and souvenirs.

In honor of the event, me & the ladies sported crowns that we had fashioned for one another - each crown was uniquely its own, reflecting both the creator and the recipient. Darcey made mine, which featured two blue sparrows above a sea of white swirls - too cute!

On to the food: everything on the menu looked amazing, but we opted for two orders of the "tea for three," which came with an assortment of sandwiches, house-made scones (served warm with clotted cream & lemon curd - yum!), toasted crumpets, various sweets and several large pots of tea. Everything was delicious - especially the Fig de Blanc tea, a delicate white tea with hints of fig.

All-in-all, it was the perfect day...and if you get the chance, I highly suggest you visit Crown & Crumpet.

I stumbled upon Headmistress this evening and absolutely had to share the amazing photos featured in the fall/winter 2010 lookbook - as they are simply stunning. Apparently, the shoot was done on a sweltering day in July and the fur- and feather-adorned models were able to toughen it out, turning out some great shots despite their discomfort. That said, these photos also owe their remarkableness to photographer Sian Melton, who is amazingly talented. And of course, it goes without saying, the photos would be nothing without the Headmistress creations.

Headmistress came into existence back in 2008, when Toronto-based designer Jillian Wood began creating unique and whimsical feather headbands. In 2009, Wood relocated to London, setting up shop at the Sunday Upmarket on Brick Lane. She's since moved back to Toronto, and has added feathered headdresses, rings, brooches and more to her collection of creations. Wood also sells some vintage and faux fur pieces that have been repurposed into the likes of headbands, cuffs and muff-clutches. Check out her site to see the goods. Today, I came home to what can only be described as "the best surprise ever," a giant packaged wedged into my tiny little mailbox. I mean, who doesn't love snail mail? Wait, it gets better. Upon opening said package I discover a copy of the Better Homes and Gardens Decorating Book - dated 1956. Seriously? Okay, now this is where I tell you all how awesome my friend Jen is...seriously. I mean, what an amazingly thoughtful gift. Girl knows me so well.

So, back to the book. I mean, aside from it being the most amazing shade of blue-green, it's chock-full of amazing interiors, clever illustrations and still-relevant decorating tips. The only downside is I wish it were a catalogue I could order from! At any rate, here are just a few snippets from the book. Oh, and Jen, you rock! Love you, girl!!

{colorful crocheted necklaces/scarves with wood detailing by Archicraft}

One of my favorite exhibitors at the Renegade Craft Fair was Archicraft, the brainchild of former architecture student & current crafter Cindy Liu. The Emeryville-based, one-woman company creates a variety of items that are modern, clever and totally covetable. My favorite items in the shop included the customizable laser-cut greeting cards, colorful crocheted necklaces/scarves with wood detailing and moustache bandannas. Still, my absolute favorite item was an awesome wall hanger that featured a key-shaped silhouette and corresponding plastic key-shaped key chain that fit into set silhouette - man, that's a lot of "keys." The wall hanger also featured a small slot for mail. Am I doing a bad job describing how awesome it was? Luckily, I took a picture of it (see below). Unfortunately, I didn't buy one and the Archicraft Etsy shop is currently empty (boo!). On top of that, the link provided on the Archicraft business card is not working either. Double bummer. Guess I'll just have to keep checking their Facebook page and blog for updates.

I simply adore this Porcupine Hearts Blowfish tee by the Brooklyn-based company Gnome Enterprises. Saw it at the Renegade Craft Fair in purple...which I'm not a fan of. Luckily for me, it's available in grey online.

Renegade Craft Fair :: San Francisco

{Renegade Craft Fair at the Festival Pavillion on Fort Mason}

This past weekend some friends and I headed to San Francisco to check out the Rengade Craft Fair, a two-day event featuring more than 250 artists/vendors, craft workshops, a free photobooth and live music. The free event was held at Fort Mason in San Francisco and, despite the lack of parking, the location was pretty awesome - right on the bay and near the Golden Gate Bridge.

As for the goods, there were a ton of talented artists on hand with more than enough covetable creations to tempt my wallet. Oddly enough, I didn't actually make any purchases. Still, I did pick up nearly a dozen business cards from artists that I plan to check out online. I also took photos of some of the artists and goods at the event, here they are:

I spotted these fabulously witty letterpress cards by Old Tom Foolery yesterday while I was perusing the aisles of the Renegade Craft Fair in San Francisco. Each handmade letterpress card features a common sentiment followed by an asterisk. At the bottom of the card, the asterisk is followed by an unexpectedly humorous footnote. While I want an entire set, my favorite is probably the above card, which reads: "Happy Birthday!*" and then "*Today we celebrate your escape from the solitary confinement of your mother's maximum-security uterus." Haha!! Brilliant. The company also has a pretty awesome poster titled: A Field Guide to Typestaches. Love them!

How awesome are these colorful, wooden My Hashi Chopsticks by IDEA? Each reusable chopstick set comes with it's own to-go container - so you can refrain from using those horrible splinter-ridden, land-fill filling chopsticks used at most sushi joints. Love, love these!

I am seriously considering getting these Belle by Singerson Morrison bronze oxfords - they are so fabulous! Plus, all the reviews say they are super comfortable, which is simply a must in any footwear choice - at least, for me. Love them!

I'm a bit conservative when it comes to my fashion style, and by conservative I mean that nearly everything I own is black - wait, maybe that makes me goth (kidding!). At any rate, I have about 20 little black dresses and I find that I can always use another, so long as it has some element that sets it apart from the rest. Enter the Riviera Dress. With its cowl neck and plunging criss-crossed back, it really is unique. Of course, it looks pretty short so maybe it's more of a long shirt than a dress. Still, slap some leggings or cute shorts under this baby and you're golden.

There are so many adorable pieces in the Nadinoo Spring/Summer 2010 collection - seriously, I want it all! The British label was founded back in 2009 by Nadia Izruna, who developed three fictional characters to design for: Pixie (who is quirky and playful), Fleur (who is delicate and dreamy) and Lula (who is bold and sexy). Each piece in the collection is made by hand using silks and cottons from Liberty of London. Also, I should mention that not only is Nadia a talented designer, she also has an awesome blog. Be sure check out everything she does - it's all amazing.
